Department of Recreation & Parks

Director's Message

As the days get shorter, recreation opportunities are everywhere and are for everyone. Discover a lifetime of opportunity exploring the Kern River Parkway on a bicycle, swimming laps at the heated McMurtrey Aquatic Center, or signing up for a dance class or fitness program. The After School Program at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center provides snacks, homework help, and supervised daily activities for school age children to engage in productive time with friends and mentors. Children can learn to maintain a bicycle and then keep the bicycle for their own use and responsibility every day. Indoor soccer, adaptive sports programs, in-line hockey and learning to kayak, are just a few more fun things to do this fall.

Adults can join a softball team, participate in pickleball or reserve a picnic shelter for an outing with friends and family. With 59 parks, 32 miles of paved multi-use trail, and 2 community centers, you can create your own adventure this fall.
